Collections, research, and memory of Sorrento inlay in the historic center.
About us / Museum
The Museum-Workshop of Inlaid Wood (MUTA) was founded in 1999 in the heart of Sorrento to promote the local inlay tradition.
Located in historic Palazzo Pomarici Santomasi, the museum combines eighteenth-century interiors with a thematic route on the evolution of inlay work.
The route connects artistic heritage, historical interiors, and contemporary research to narrate the continuity of local craftsmanship.
Origins and mission
Since opening to the public, the museum has acted both as a guardian of memory and as an active promoter of contemporary production.
Route and collections
Collections are organized by thematic sections and trace the evolution of inlay from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
Ethnographic dimension
The route includes testimonies linked to local customs, citrus culture, and Grand Tour visitors.
Tradition and contemporary practice
Exhibitions, publications, talks, and workshops support a cultural program that keeps inlay heritage alive and evolving.
MUTA works as an active cultural hub involving scholars, artisans, and visitors.
The visit links artworks, techniques, and place memory into one narrative.
The museum encourages critical reflection on inlay in a contemporary key.
New creative expressions and design practices are developed in dialogue with historical tradition.
